What’s wrong with frosting on the compressors of air cooled industrial chiller?

  1. The ambient temperature is too low

At lower ambient temperatures, if the surface temperature of the air compressor is lower than the dew point temperature (i.e. the temperature at which water vapor condenses into water), moisture will condense into ice. This situation is particularly prone to occur in winter, as the indoor temperature is high while the external temperature is low, resulting in a thin layer of ice near the compressor.

  2. Excessive air humidity

When there is too much water in the air, it will begin to condense into ice, resulting in frost formation. This situation usually occurs in humid environments, such as damp basements or factory workshops.

  3. Poor system drainage

After a period of use, a large amount of water may accumulate inside the air compressor. If the drainage system (such as the drainage valve) is not smooth, it will cause water to not be discharged in a timely manner, ultimately forming frost.

  4. Cooling or dehumidification system malfunction

When the cooling or dehumidification system of an air compressor malfunctions, it can cause moisture in the system to be unable to be eliminated, leading to frost formation. This situation usually requires technical personnel to inspect and maintain the air compressor.

In response to the above issues, we can take the following measures to prevent frost formation on the air compressor:

  1. Control room temperature and humidity

Try to maintain a suitable temperature and humidity around the air compressor as much as possible. In winter, indoor temperature can be increased, and equipment such as air heaters and humidifiers can be used to reduce humidity. In summer with high humidity, equipment such as air conditioning and dehumidifiers can be used to reduce humidity.

  2. Maintenance of cooling system in summer

In summer, the cooling system is usually used frequently, so regular inspection and maintenance are required. This includes checking the working status of the cooling system, cleaning the surface of the cooler, replacing the filter, etc.

  3. Smooth drainage of the system

Maintaining the smoothness of system drainage is also important. It is necessary to regularly check the status of the system drainage system, including whether the drainage valves and pipelines are unobstructed. If the drainage is not smooth, it is necessary to clean or replace the drainage system in a timely manner.

  4. Check the cooling or dehumidification system

When abnormal phenomena such as frost formation occur in the air compressor, it is necessary to immediately inspect and repair the cooling or dehumidification system. It is necessary to investigate the cause and handle it in a timely manner to avoid unnecessary losses.
